Be Practical

Be Practical

I will start with an incident which took place in Coimbatore, 6 months ago.

It was Friday, after the work, many of us boarded in company bus… after about 10mins of journey, there was a spark from the bulb inside the bus. The bulb was not tightly fitted, so it was just hanging with some small sparks.

Many ran from that place to other place to protect themselves, some girls just shouted and one guy went with newspaper to hold the bulb & to fix it. Many gave free advises.

But, suddenly bus stopped, bus driver came and grabbed the bulb and just pulled out of the socket, the wires got cut and he took the bulb and continued to drive.

For one second, all were silent and realized how much practical knowledge is important.

We were all so called Engineers inside the bus, we have studied electrical and automotive electrical. We have scored good marks. We know it’s a 12V or 24V supply u can handle it easily.

But still we were not daring to do what bus driver did!!!

We get graduated from great universities with highest ranks and scores. But we did not get confidence and practical knowledge!!!

Coming to same incident, the bus driver had practical experience in changing bulbs or he might have experienced the same incident before. From his practical experience he had the confidence that this voltage will not hurt him anyways.

What we did? We started calculating power? Recalling Ohm’s law Bla Bla….But if our practical experience were good we would have just went and removed the bulb from the socket with our bare hands.

An Automobile engineer will take 1hr to remove tire from a bike, but an uneducated boy from the shop needs only 10min.

An Electrical engineer needs 1 hr to find what is the problem in mixer? But an ITI guy from service shop need 1hr to repair.

This list goes on… there are many examples to give..

Being an Engineer, its not only to have theoretical knowledge, we also need very good practical knowledge. Both are equally important.

Remember we are living in practical world, it demands more practical person.

Guys, other than just reading books and getting some knowledge, let’s do some experiments and practical stuffs.

My request is, just try to put in to action what you have learnt. Do some experiments in your domain. Improve your confidence and practical knowledge.

Many inventions have happened while doing experiments and some are by accidents also.

Books give us only Ideal condition, experiments teach us practical condition and it improves our confidence to live in practical environment.

In practical world, you teach yourself. You will learn from your own mistakes. You will gain more confidence.

Be Practical!!!!!!

  1. Boss, there is a difference why the education system has seperated ITI / Diploma from Engineering/Basic sciences. Agreed that there is very less practical knowledge in today's engineers but look at our educational system from 1st to 10th... the roots for practicality should start from a very early age!!!

  2. Hi Friend,

The concept of education system u told is correct. I am not asking Engineer to do surgery..
Person should be more practical in his own field.. If one is practiced his work, he will have more cofidence than the similar guy with out practical exposure.. Thats why in law or in medical they call it as Law practice or Medical practice before they actually start their work... Unfortunately similar system is not available for Engineers... May be internship can give little sense...
